Conversation between Joseriberto Perez and Olivia Ramos.

Olivia Ramos

Oil on Canvas, 2014

12.5 x 16"

PEREZ:  ‬what’s the size?

RAMOS:  ‪study 12 x16"‬‬‬

is it on the reverse‬‬?‬

yes I liked it better that way‬‬‬

wow first reaction is that it is both loose and tighter than your preliminary studies on paper

Olivia Ramos

Oil on Board, 2014

12.5 x 12.5"

in the new one the simplicity of the line is interesting and the wash and marks are much more painterly ‬

the brush has arrived‬‬

I feel more comfortable with the medium now‬‬, the line quality helps define a bit more‬

the simplicity in this new one is more isolating,‬‬ brought on by the quality of mark making that you can achieve by using the backside of the  canvas

De Chirico is someone who’s images come up in regards to the isolated figures in your work, worth looking at

Giorgio de Chirico

Mystery and Melancholy of a Street. 1914

Oil on Canvas, 34.6 x 28.3"

I can see that.. there are also a lot of colonnades and architecture in general‬‬‬

I was looking a bit at Modigliani

Amedeo Modigliani

Seated Nude, 1917

Oil on Canvas, 31.8 x 25.6"

actually de Chirico’s “Portrait of Señora Gartzen" has a Modiglianish air to it‬‬. The rest of his work reminds me of Dali

Giorgio de Chirico

Portrait of Señora Gartzen, 1913

yes that too but I’m drawn to the solitude of the figures and how the perspective gives it this air of the surreal or suspended time ‬

can you tell me a little‬‬ ‪about what the topless figures are doing?

the topless figures are taking a break‬‬

‪the figures themselves are women serving drinks and I am not sure if they represent how I feel in the bar atmosphere or how I view women in the bar atmosphere.. could be both

i saw this figure in a dream and in dreams we are every character, each are different mirrors of ourselves

so these ladies are tired, tired of the bar scene

its rather puzzling because they are present but not able to participate in what’s going on in the space‬‬

the figure sitting gives me the impression of wanting to participate but not having the means, the standing figure looks ready to go‬‬

‪let me send you the second one ‬

you are right... the figures are detached from the scene

‪the shades really give the experience of a tunnel‬‬‬

‪I’m looking at the previous paper studies and the people in them produce entirely different scenario

its a situation to be these figures and to be balancing bottles with no hands‬‬‬ ‬

Olivia Ramos

Oil on Canvas, 2014

12.5 x 18"

Wowowowowow you neeeeed to make so many more of these to keep the narrative and possibilities that arise in each one of these‬‬

The lady is like “do I need more I want more”… what’s this?

‪that lady is obviously part of the “scene”‬

i like the way the background is crunched up‬‬, the perspective looks funny but its right ‬

yeah the perspective is more extreme‬‬ bringing the attention to the discomfort of the topless figure ‬

‪the accent in the column and the one light balance the composition‬

I’m impressed by the casualness of the line, the figure’s hand and lips and eyes

I can make so many references to figurative painters but this image and the figure is totally yours

‪I’m looking for something to see it through like a poem or a sentence like do you keep quotes around that you formulate with the works‬‬?

hmm... no no text - I make collages‬‬‬

Olivia Ramos

Paper Collage, 2014

8.5 x 11"

if you had a quote or a poem... what would it sounds like?

anyway, have a nice night
